Port kids’ Book Month kicks off novel fundrais­ing

I Love My Li­brary book month has drawn to a close, and to see it out Port Dou­glas State School chil­dren dressed up as their favourite book char­ac­ters.

The kids par­tic­i­pated in a sing along and en­joyed a pa­rade be­fore awards for the best dressed char­ac­ter were handed out.

Mean­while, the book drive to re­place much of the worn out stock in the li­brary con­tin­ues.

Jenny Ed­mond­son has vol­un­teered to take up the chal­lenge, and has found a novel way to source new books.

Ms Ed­mond­son, a school par­ent, has been email­ing out book lists and var­i­ous in­di­vid­u­als have re­sponded with amounts equal to each book.

“Right now we’ve got enough for more than 100 books but it would be even bet­ter if we could get a few more,” Ms Ed­mond­son says.

The stu­dent Read-a-Thon also raised more than $550.

The teach­ers have been help­ing to gen­er­ate the book lists.

The tar­gets are mostly cur­rent fic­tion, for ages 6-12

“I’ve still got a lot of lists that I need spon­sors for,” Ms Ed­mond­son said.

Some of the books will be bought lo­cally where pos­si­ble.
