Tuna kept family fed for days

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Chris Greenacre

WE’RE up from Melbourne for a week. Down there I fish rivers and lakes, but mostly off the piers down near Port Arlington.

The best fish I’ve ever caught is a 6 kg tuna off the Gold Coast. That was about 12 months ago, on a charter. It was a really good fight. There was about eight people aboard, on a four-hour charter. We caught about 12 tuna that day. Half the people onboard were Brazilians and they were going bananas. They said they would start drinking when they caught a big fish – so they started drinking about 7:30 in the morning.

When I got this tuna on the line it was the best thing ever.I was thinking, ‘what is this thing that is about to snap my rod?’ I had to feed out a lot of run and let it run.

The crew knew what to do and gave us lots of advice.

I got a bit tired, it knocks the socks off you a bit. My previous biggest fish was probably about a kilo, so to catch something six times that is a bit different.

It took about five minutes to get it to the boat.

I thought it was likely a tuna. And then when we got it in I could see it, and I thought ‘this is amazing – someone take a picture so I can show my friends because they will never believe me’.

We took it home and it was beautiful. It was magnificent. It fed the family for a week, and even then we couldn’t get through it!
