Bombshell for Paws and Claws: ‘You can’t have Yule Pt land’
FROM PAGE 1 of encouragement and investigation by the Department, including its commissioning of a valuation for purchase of the site by Council, it is completely bewildering to receive this response which will be devastating for the community.
“We’re talking about a proposal for a fenced enclosure and purpose-built kennels on a parcel of land in a rural location.”
Ms Leu said council will request a copy of the advice which triggered the department’s current position and she has requested a meeting with the Minister to raise the shire’s concerns personally.
The news follows a desperate couple of years for the animal shelter.
Several alternative locations suggested in the past two years met the stumbling block of local community concerns.
Then, a few months ago, Paws and Claws had to shut down its kennel operations completely on the Cook Highway site at Craiglie due to being evicted as part of the sale process of the block, which it had inhabited for more than 20 years.
Since then, animals have been “fostered out” to various indivduals in the area.
The rejection of the Yule Pt plan means the animal shelter, which enjoys enormous public support, can either look around for a new site – unlikely since it has exhausted all known possibilities – or mount a fight to overturn the decision.
