Fish­er­man res­cued off burn­ing boat

A DEV­AS­TATED fish­er­man was forced to watch his pride and joy ves­sel burn to the wa­ter af­ter it caught fire off Cairns.

The lo­cal man, who only wanted to be known as Steve, had spent the day fish­ing with a mate off False Cape and had been pre­par­ing to head back in when they re­alised the en­gine was alight.

“We tried the ex­tin­guisher and that didn’t work,” he said.

“It’s a 380 litre tank and it was al­most full so there was about 300 litres of petrol sit­ting in there so we knew (we had to flee).”

The men man­aged to is­sue a may­day call and crew on the nearby fish­ing char­ter ves­sel Aqua-cat had spot­ted the smoke and di­verted over to help.

Deck­hand Dean Mans­field said, “They were a bit shaken up, you don’t want to watch your boat go down do you?

Steve said he only pur­chased the 8.1m Sun­dancer called Phenix 18 months ago and had just com­pleted a $200,000 re­fit.
