Fisherman rescued off burning boat
A DEVASTATED fisherman was forced to watch his pride and joy vessel burn to the water after it caught fire off Cairns.
The local man, who only wanted to be known as Steve, had spent the day fishing with a mate off False Cape and had been preparing to head back in when they realised the engine was alight.
“We tried the extinguisher and that didn’t work,” he said.
“It’s a 380 litre tank and it was almost full so there was about 300 litres of petrol sitting in there so we knew (we had to flee).”
The men managed to issue a mayday call and crew on the nearby fishing charter vessel Aqua-cat had spotted the smoke and diverted over to help.
Deckhand Dean Mansfield said, “They were a bit shaken up, you don’t want to watch your boat go down do you?
Steve said he only purchased the 8.1m Sundancer called Phenix 18 months ago and had just completed a $200,000 refit.
