Meteors smash own PBs
EARLY morning starts, many hours training after school, and weekends poolside are seeing Meteor Swim Squad members smash their PB’s at each swim meet they attend.
Last Saturday and Sunday saw the team of 22 swimmers (8 Mossman - 14 Tobruk/ Cairns) compete in the Saints Long Course Qualifier at Tobruk Pool.
The fast paced two-day meet, complete with background thumping baseline songs, was run like clockwork by the Saints Swim Club, Cairns.
(13yrs) competed in 7 events over the two days resulting in seven new PBs, most notable being a 18sec PB gaining him a 4th place in the 100m Breast. Fantastic results in only two weeks since the last meet. BEN: Heath, in what is becoming a regular fashion, has constant improvement not in just times but in his performance and the level of maturity he brings to his races. He qualified for the JX Junior Excellence Green Squad for 50m Free, 50m Back and Bronze Squad for 50m Breast.
(15yrs) competing in only his second swim meet swam in 6 events placing 2nd in the 100m Back, 100m Free, 100m Breast and 200m Free. He also placed 3rd in the 400m Free by smashing his old PB by just under 9secs! BEN: Mitch is growing in his role as a senior swimmer within the club and performing well under race conditions making new leaps and bounds in his competitive swimming. His talent is showing in his ability to finish strong in every single race. Mitch, who is already qualified for the 100m Free and 200m Free for Queensland State Championships, is just a second shy of the 400m Free to qualify, which is a great result at this time in his training.
(12yrs) swam in 7 events and placed 2nd in the 100m Back, 50m Breast, 50m Back, 100m Breast and 200m Free also gaining new PB’s in 3 of these events. BEN: Angus performed well in his 100m Back showing promise in his growing skills in that event plus smashing out a great 100m Breast leading the heat and performing a 4.22sec PB. He executed well in his race strategies showing he is learning quickly how to properly perform the longer events.
(9yrs) swam his first ever swim meet and gained times in the 50m Free and 50m Back. BEN: Despite his nerves and being his first ever carnival amongst the best FNQ Swimming has to offer, he performed well getting official times up on the board setting up future targets for the rest of the 2016/17 Season.
(12yrs) also swam in her first swim meet competing in 5 events and gaining times in all. BEN : Alyssa just like her brother Ashton was her very first carnival and swam awesome under pressure setting the bench mark. Her ability in sticking to executing racing strategies is great to watch as her 50m Fly showed, which for me was her highlighted event.
(11yrs) gained new PB’s in her 50m Free, 50m Breast, 50m Back and 100m Free events. BEN: Grace stepping up from her previous carnival in Mareeba did not disappoint on the weekend. Grace’s performance and times shows any swimmer having high standards in training will give you rewards. The 50m Fly was not only just a physical race but a mental ‘Mount Everest’ for her to overcome and the team could not be more proud for her in stepping up and tackling it head on.
(12yrs) placed in the top ten for all 5 events she entered and gained a new PB in the 200m Individual Medley. BEN: Sophie’s highlight for me was the 200m Free, even though it was not a PB, it proved to Sophie to trust her ability/talent as she can go out hard with the best of them and finish strong. Sophie’s developing talent in racing and using her strengths at the right time is starting to shine and very soon will surprise herself in what she is capable of doing.
(11yrs) swam in 3 events on the Saturday including a new event for her, the 100m Back. BEN: Sophia is proving to be a swimmer that has a mix bag of talents. To watch her skills grow in her technique and racing performances is awesome to watch. FNQ Championships will be great event to see her race and I cannot wait.
(12yrs) competed in her first swim meet gaining times in the 50m Free and 50m Breast. BEN: Emily is a swimmer that is rapidly improving showing on the weekend it will not be long until she will be pushing the top competitors. Keeping up the hard work in training, Emily always pushes her selfstriving excellence.
The Meteors next swim meet will be the Malanda Tropical Christmas Short Course Meet on the December 3.
