Ten pound trout on the wall

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Brian Mulvay

I live in New Zealand and have fished for most of my life. We go up to Taupo quite a lot and fish for trout.

My best fish was a 10.5 lb rainbow trout and I’ve got it mounted on a wall at home.

It took me a week to find that fish.

I was up at Turangi for a week and a half. It’s one of the best fly fishing places in the world and I got three good trout in a morning.

I was wading in the stream when that fish struck. It was just a really good pull on the line rather than a big strike, but I could certainly feel it.

You have to play them a lot, tire them out. You can’t just pull them in.

I didn’t have a net, so I just put my finger in its gills and pulled it out.

Then I cast some more and five minutes later I had another, almost as big, a 7¼ pounder. Then I got a six pounder. It was a lovely day – I was struggling to get it all back to the car actually.
