DOUGLAS Shire Council has begun removing coconut palms from Ocean View Rd recently, as part of its Coconut Action Plan adopted in September.
Ocean View Rd represents the only major concentration of coconut palms to be removed in the shire, with 46 to be removed from that area alone because they are deemed to be ‘inappropriate streetscape.’
A DSC spokesperson said this was because of “the high risk to public and traffic safety associated with falling nuts and fronds,” and the resulting public liability and insurance claims.
The DSC will be planting replacement trees golden pendas(Xanthostemon chyrsanthus) in locations on Ocean View Rd that are suitable.
Another 30 are to be removed from other locations around the shire, with the vast majority simply slated for denutting.
