A young man was lucky to have escaped alive when his small car left the road at Yule Point on Tuesday and rolled into the sea, ending up on its roof.

The 19-year-old, believed to be Tim Matthews of Cairns, was taken to Cairns hospital, suffering shoulder pains.

His father, John, was on the scene at 9 am when the vehicle was dragged out of the water at Pebbly Beach, about 60 metres south of Yule Point.

He told the Gazette his son, who had been travelling south, had told him he had tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

Traffic was halted several times while emergency services attended this incident and another a short time later, about 7:30 am when a black ute crashed into the hillside at Yule Point and rolled.

A father and son who are tilers from Cairns, were travelling north to do a job in Port Douglas when they crashed on the bend, though travelling at slow speed.

They were taken to Mossman Hospital with minor in- juries.
