Black Mt goes green
A police raid on a Black Mountain Rd property in Julatten netted 42 mature cannabis plants this week.
Three investigators from the Cairns Tactical Crime Squad and two detectives from the Mossman Criminal Investigation Branch descended on the large acreage property in the early hours of Monday morning. They had received information recently about possible cultivation of cannabis in the area, and came prepared with a search warrant after an investigation.
“Discovered growing on the property was a cannabis plantation (with) an elaborate irrigation set up,” said Detective Sgt Trevor Perham of Mossman CIB.
“We seized 42 two-metre cannabis plants and a quantity of growing equipment.
“The potential estimated street value of the cannabis would be in excess of $100,000, and was destined for the local market, according to intelligence.”
A 57-year-old Julatten man, believed to be the owner of the property, was charged with one count of producing a dangerous drug, as well as a lesser charge of possessing drug utensils which were found in the home on the property. The charge of producing dangerous drugs in the quantity seized carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.
The man will face the Mossman Magistrates Court on December 21. The 42 mature plants are destined to be destroyed by police.
