A GROUP of lucky divers were able to swim with a whale shark during a rare encounter with one of the gentle giants on the Great Barrier Reef. Townsville based charter boat Kalinda chanced upon the 7m long filter feeder while sailing north of Cape Melville, 500km northwest of Cairns. Skipper Dave Stewart said the whale shark appeared just as they were scoping for potential dive sites. Mr Stewart said the whale shark hung around the vessel long enough for his passengers to get into the water with it. It came straight over to the boat,” he said.
