Now that’s a cray!

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

I’VE lived in Cairns all my life and have done a lot of fishing down there. My best fish was about three months ago -- a barramundi, the prized fish of the north. I was at the Barron River, at a spot I’ve fished dozens of times over the years.

I was using a hand line and I just threw the line in, not expecting to catch a barra. I was using a herring for bait.

It was about 8 am and I was about to give up. I threw the line in for one more go.

I saw the hand line go tight and there were lots of splashes and I thought it was a stingray.

I started to pull it up and I could see this big silver thing. I was shocked when I saw what it was. I was the only one on the jetty and I wondered how I was going to get it up.

It was really, really heavy. But it only took about 10 minutes to get it out. I was pretty stoked. I got it up and took a photo and then let it go. It was 1.3 metres -- it was a monster.

I like jetty fishing. You can sit comfortably, there’s fewer mosquitoes and no crocs.
