Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

DOUGLAS Shire is celebrating the new year, with news this week that a special grant from the state government to regional councils means the shire will have another $1.99 million to use on local projects.

It is an economic stimulus package that amounts to $200 million for regional councils.

Mayor Julia Leu was delighted with the news yesterday, as it comes on top of a highly successful round of grant applications late last year.

“It’s fantastic news because there’s a number of eligible projects we can apply for under this funding,” Ms Leu said.

“There’s a very wide of projects. I’ll be talking with fellow councillors and staff immediately about what sort of package we can put forward to the government. We’ve got two weeks to do it.”

Ms Leu said this Works for Queensland package reminded her a great deal of the economic stimulus program that was launched by the Gillard government, in which every council received money for local works.
