Scomazzon chases his big break

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Shane Nichols

SCHOOL’S in for ambitious young golfer Nick Scomazzon.

This week the 15 year old (turning 16 in March) from Mossman High went off to Hills International College in Beaudesert, south-east Qld, as a boarder so he can benefit from the college’s golf program.

The school is one of several in southern Queensland that offer a golf academy and has the happy distinction of having produced the current world No 1 professional golfer, Jason Day.

Nick’s been deeply in golf world for years, since picking up the clubs at the age of seven, practising and playing as much as time allows.

But now it will go up another level. More practice and coaching and all the other things – fitness, nutrition, psychology, “that sort of stuff”, said Nick.

“I’m very fortunate and I have very good parents who are willing to send me there,” he said. “I’m very privileged because I know there’s a lot of other kids who want to go there.”

As regards his ambitions, he said “I’m going well.

“I’ve been working really hard in recent months on specific parts of my game that will improve me faster” – something his coach from mid 2016, Dan Harrigan at Palmer Sea Reef, backs up.

“He’s improved a lot in a few months,” Harrigan said. “He’s worked very hard in the time that I’ve had him. He’s gone from a kid with raw talent to a player with good technique to go with that, and he plays extremely well.”

Harrigan said Nick’s enrolment at Hills was a great opportunity. “He’ll be around good players, play great golf courses and play a lot of competition – it’ll be great for him.

“And to be around likeminded kids of his age, it will be great.”

Nick’s plan is to play as many events as he can and put himself on the radar in the golfing world.

“I definitely plan to put myself out there.” And that means winning? “Yes, you have to be winning,” he said.

Last December he came seventh in the Greg Norman Junior Masters on the Gold Coast.

At his local club, Palmer Sea Reef, he plays off 1.
