The best part of our trip to the Far North

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

Who said indigenous cultural tourism is losing its appeal (Cairns Post, January 19)? The award-winning Mossman Gorge Centre hosts around half a million visitors a year, and the number is not declining. People like the Hogan family, who were inspired to write the following thank you letters to Roy Gibson and the Gorge Centre after their visit recently. Dear Roy Thank you for inviting us to Mossman Gorge and telling us about all your stories. My favourite was your dream for Mossman Gorge because it was about how you made it, even though it took a long time.

I walked to the watering hole along the boardwalk and then we walked in the trees on the way back. I was hugging the trees and it made me feel happy because it felt nice to me. Thank you and it was lovely to meet you

Dear Roy Yesterday we visited Mossman Gorge and I was interested in your story about how the Centre was a dream of yours for more than 20 years. It was inspiring and I shared your story with my 6 year old son Oliver and daughter Ruby (3).

Oliver was fascinated by your story and decided to go into the shop to ask if you worked there. We met Rose and she showed Oliver a painting of you and we talked about the Gorge and the Centre and what a magical and beautiful place it was.

Rose tried to contact you to see if you were returning to the Centre for a quick hello. This wasn’t possible and Rose offered to call us the following morning to see if it would be possible to meet you.

We returned to Port Douglas with warm hearts and two pairs of clapping sticks that the kids had purchased with their own money. The following morning at breakfast we had a call from Rose explaining that you would be able to meet Oliver that morning.

I can’t explain how delighted we all were to meet you and hear your stories. We could have sat there for days listening to you speak and I walked away on a cloud. Oliver has been showing his ‘autographed’ bottle to everyone he meets and telling them that he met you.

Thank you so very much for the privilege of meeting you and talking with us. It has made our holiday a very special one and something we won’t ever forget.

Thank you also to Rose, who listened to a small boy and took the time to talk with him and create a meeting that will be forever treasured. We are truly grateful.

With much love

Oliver with Roy Gibson
