Douglas Derby Divas set to rock sports expo
“WHEN I put my skates on I forget everything there is about life and I become a skater. “I love being a skater. “I feel free; I don’t have a care in the world.”
Meet Violent Gemmes (aka Gemma Walker), who is one of the founders, back in 2013, of the Douglas Derby Divas roller skating team.
“We train for two hours and the time flies. And you work every muscle in your body, muscles in places you never knew you had.”
The Divas are still very much in the building stage but they have high hopes of bringin in others to this rapidly growing sport.
“We’re still in the training stage. we have to pass our minimum skills, which is the WSTDA requirement, to be able to play competitively,” Violent Gemmes said.
“Once we do, we’ll be competing agains tthe Cairns teams, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, and the Tablelands.
“The sport is popular in Victoria, which has a very good league that competes in the world cup (the last one was in the US in 2016.)
“It’s definitely a sport that is growing,” said Ms Gemmes, “I think because of the social aspect as well.
“You get to meet a lot of people along the way.
“It attracts families to compete or watch – we’ve all got kids, we’re all families.
“Which is why we’re going to introducing a junior team for our league.
“With all of our kids, we’ve got a junior team. There’s a junior roller derby in Cairns but we’d like one in our district.” The junior league is for boys and girls.
They do have fun on the rink.
Apart from the competition itself, the Derby Divas have had events such as retro theme nights on the roller skates, with pumpin’ music and costumes. The Divas have roller discos once a month. Recently they hosted Mossman youth centre kids for a night of skating, and they all had a blast.
The Divas are planning training sessions during the school terms this year.
