Mossman Gym looking for new home
THE Mossman Gym Club jumped out of a frying pan last year, and while it hasn’t quite landed in the fire there’s more heat being put on the popular club in the form of uncertainty over its current home.
Pinjarra Place on Mill St – where the club moved late last year – is on the market.
“We half expected it but we didn’t expect it to come so soon especially after we just got all settled and cut up out floor strips,” said club manager Hayley Bender.
“We only have a month to month lease so we don’t have any security. Unfortunately the owner really wants to sell it.
“(But) It’s all that we could get at this stage – we were desperate, we needed somewhere to go.”
Ms Bender is optimistic the club will survive, with Mayor Julia Leu pledging the council’s support for the club.
Ms Bender said there was potential for a new facility Coronation Park in Mossman, which has been on the club’s radar as a potential home for many years.
“It’s much better for us down there, and I think with all the other groups already there it can be a bit of a community hub.” Mayor Julia Leu told the
the DSC would continue to assist the club.
Now that a Land Management Plan for Coronation Park had been approved by the DNRM, the council could offer trustee leases to users of the showgrounds.
“As the Gymnastics Club has long-term plans to secure grant funding to construct a purpose-built building at the Showgrounds to house its equipment and operate classes, Council has invited it to join the [showground] user group.”
