Cops, Leu hit out at ‘stupid’ drivers
WET weather brings out the worst in some drivers it seems Mossman police have reported that some motorists’ behaviour about floodwaters has been “horrifying.”
“There’s been a number of reports due to the wet weather and flooding that motorists have been removing or disobeying road closed signs,” said Mossman Officer in charge Matt Smith.
Some drivers were also becoming argumentative and abusive towards council workers who have been putting up signs.
“In the past few days there’s been some horrendous reports about motorists’ cavalier attitudes towards floodwater over roadways.
“One of my officers was waiting in line about 10 cars back, and a car just went past them, overtook all the cars waiting and tried to cross, and then got stranded halfway through!
“We cannot stress strongly enough – while it’s inconvenient to have to go another route to your destination, or if you have to sit on the roadside and wait for water levels to fall, that’s just the way it is.”
Sgt Smith said that besides those they caught in the act, Mossman Police had a number of motorists to speak to.
“We’re investigating a number of instances where we’ve got photos of people disobeying road closure signs and doing their own thing.”
Mayor Julia Leu confirmed council workers had been diligently reporting drivers ignoring signs.
“We will not tolerate people who ignore these directions, which are obviously done to protect our communities.
“The message is simple, If It’s Flooded Forget It.
“Council, and the police, are taking a zero tolerance approach to this stupid and dangerous behaviour. There are no excuses.”
