Deluge puts us well on Feb track
TO state the obvious – it’s been a wet start to February. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Reef Park station recorded 392.5mm of rain up to 9am on Wednesday morning, from the start of the month – putting Port Douglas well over a third of the way towards its 983mm median for the month.
The numbers for Sunday back up the weekend’s drenching – 172mm fell by 9am that day.
According to BOM senior climate liaison officer Dr Jeff Sabburg, the Port Douglas station has a 79 per cent chance of reaching 700mm this month.
The rest of the shire is looking pretty well watered too, with more on the way.
“For Upper Daintree for February, the median is 1508mm,” said Dr Sabburg.
“The (BOM) model spits out a hundred per cent chance of getting at least 700mm.”
It’s almost there already – “we’re up to 588mm to 9am on the 7th for Daintree Village.”
