Del­uge puts us well on Feb track

TO state the ob­vi­ous – it’s been a wet start to Fe­bru­ary. The Bureau of Me­te­o­rol­ogy’s Reef Park sta­tion recorded 392.5mm of rain up to 9am on Wed­nes­day morn­ing, from the start of the month – putting Port Dou­glas well over a third of the way to­wards its 983mm me­dian for the month.

The num­bers for Sun­day back up the week­end’s drench­ing – 172mm fell by 9am that day.

Ac­cord­ing to BOM se­nior cli­mate li­ai­son of­fi­cer Dr Jeff Sab­burg, the Port Dou­glas sta­tion has a 79 per cent chance of reach­ing 700mm this month.

The rest of the shire is look­ing pretty well wa­tered too, with more on the way.

“For Up­per Dain­tree for Fe­bru­ary, the me­dian is 1508mm,” said Dr Sab­burg.

“The (BOM) model spits out a hun­dred per cent chance of get­ting at least 700mm.”

It’s al­most there al­ready – “we’re up to 588mm to 9am on the 7th for Dain­tree Vil­lage.”
