Boomers cover up the risks

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Peter Hall

BABY boomers often lie about their health and fitness because they don’t want to miss out on a Great Barrier Reef experience, industry representatives say.

Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators spokesman, Col McKenzie, told

the horror run of deaths was due to an ageing demographic that was not getting any less adventurous.

Mr McKenzie said that while changes needed to be considered to help improve safety, the industry should be wary not overreact.

The victims were in a similar demographic – Baby Boomers – and these carried a higher risk due to their age and range of existing health conditions.

When questioned about their health, they were reluctant to provide information and sometimes hid the truth.

“We have a massive industry geared up for helping old people but no legal right to ask them about their personal details. And the fact is they lie.”
