Open space at heart of concept
THE marina redevelopment isn’t just about money and jobs; the project will create new spaces that will brighten the heart of Port Douglas.
“Our design seeks to create a vibrant, active waterfront; an attractive place to live and visit,” said Mr Hooper-Nguyen.
The new amenities will include a waterfront boardwalk, a Rainforest Walk and a public plaza.
Mr Hooper-Nguyen said these aspects will be the stars of the redevelopment.
“Focus will be upon the spectacular views.”
He said that of the whole development, the Rainforest Walk stood out to him.
“I really love the Rainforest Walk. It will create a strong pedestrian connection between the marina and town centre; while also being a shaded and beautifully landscaped space.”
Another standout addition is the public plaza, which according to architect John Lonergan would knit everything together.
“A key aim of the Plaza was to create an active people space with strong visual connections from the water through to Wharf Street; to the new Marina building entry; and Macrossan Street,” said Mr Loneragan.
The plaza will include small popup shops to ‘activate’ the space.
“We want people to linger and relax while enjoying a wonderful water view and the boating activity in the Duck Pond and on the Inlet.”
