METEORS GO TO TULLY

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

SEVEN young swimmers from the Meteors (Mossman) travelled to Tully for the Mean Green’s first club hosted carnival in 10 years.

True to Tully weather, the rain came down as the competition kicked off at 1pm — not that it mattered much in an aquatic sport.

Emily Donoghue (12yrs) competed in six events including four new events, the 50m Back, 100m Back, 100m Breast and 100m Free, gaining new times on the board for all of them. Emily also swam the 50m Free with an awesome 7sec PB and the 50m Breast for a 3sec PB.

Tom Gall (11yrs) swam in seven events, including for the first time, the gruelling 200m Individual Medley. Tom gained a new time to work on for that one and also came away with vital seconds off and new PB’s in his 50m Free, 50m Back and 100m Back swims.

Ashton Heise (10yrs) competed in four events over the afternoon, the 50m Back, 50m Breast and earned himself a new PB in the 50m Free and an impressive 5sec PB in the last event of the night, the 100m Freestyle.

Grace Jones (11yrs) took on a total of eight events in all, in- cluding for the first time at a swim meet, the 200m Individual Medley. Swimming sideby-side with team mate Alyssa, they finished within 1/2 sec of each other in the freestyle sprint to the finish. Grace also shaved seconds off her PB’s in the 50m Back, 100m Back, 50m Breast and 100m Freestyle swims.

Alyssa Heise (12yrs) swam in seven events over the course of the day including two new events, the 100m Backstroke and the 200m Individual Medley for times on the board to work to better at the next meet.

Bob Gall (8yrs) overcame his stage fright of earlier in the meet to complete the Boys 8yrs & Under, 25m Breaststroke event. Swimming this stroke for the first time in a competition, Bob placed 7th overall and enjoyed the swim!

Cooper Jones (5yrs) swimming against the under 8’s, competed in three events, the 25m Free, 25m Back and 25m Breast. Cooper placed 4th in the Free, 6th in the Back and 8th Breaststroke - not a bad effort for the young swimmer!

This weekend sees the culmination of the 2016-17 FNQ swim season with the Regional Championships being held at the Tobruk Memorial Pool on March 4-5.

Spectators are more than welcome to attend and cheer on their local purple-capped Meteors swimmers.
