DSC urges state to pro­long works pro­gram fund­ing

THE Dou­glas Shire Coun­cil has joined with other coun­cils to re­quest the state gov­ern­ment con­tinue fund­ing the Works for Queens­land in­fra­struc­ture pro­gram be­yond the elec­tion year.

Speak­ing at the coun­cil’s or­di­nary meet­ing Dou­glas Mayor Ju­lia Leu said there was plenty of spec­u­la­tion there was go­ing to be an elec­tion this year, and said that the fund­ing should be more than an elec­tion ploy, but a last­ing cam­paign to lower un­em­ploy­ment.

“We cer­tainly know that we are very much in state elec­tion mode to some ex­tent ... and I think it’s re­ally im­por­tant that lo­cal gov­ern­ment sec­tor recog­nise the value of this pro­gram and puts pres­sure on the gov­ern­ment, and also on the op­po­si­tion that this pro­gram con­tinue,” said Cr Leu.
