Thanks to all the businesses who helped fill our library
LAST year the Port Douglas State School and their P&C Assoc ran the ‘I Love My Library’ initiative, a month dedicated to getting students reading and gathering funds to provide new books for the school’s fabulous library.
The brainchild of school parent Louise Polain, the whole month was a wonderful success. The library has received 450 new and second hand books through book donations from students, families and the wider community. They have also received another 391 books purchased with donations from more than 20 local businesses.
Cash donations from other businesses and a Student Read-a-Thon generated another $1500 which will be spent on buying new books from this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge list.
School parent Jenny Edmondson spent many hours searching for and purchasing the new books and has done an outstanding job. She purchased a mix of non-fiction and fiction. The non-fiction books cover many different subjects from meerkats to space, gardening, cooking, craft, cars, science, which are an inspirational mix of things primary aged children are interested in. She also purchased a large selection of children’s current best selling fiction books - wonderful stories for all ages and tastes.
While the P&C and school have had a very successful campaign, they plan to keep the momentum going with birthday book donations and other events. The P&C would like to thank both Jenny and Louise for their hard work in this campaign and also a massive THANK YOU to all the local business folk that generously donated over $7000 to purchase the new books!
