Guess that’s why they call it the blues

The Cairns AFL’s decision to start this season earlier to accommodate the Crocodile Rocker’s September 30 show at Cazaly’s is being blamed for the mess up that was the XXX Gold pre-season cup last weekend, which has put Port Doug- las in the firing line for forfeiting their finals match.
Crocs president Chris Bradsworth said yesterday that starting earlier in the season meant the club was struggling for numbers – “as everyone knows, all the clubs are”.
It’s still a bit warm for clubs to be bringing their new players up; jobs for some of them are still in the works. It’s all meant to happen later, he said.
And then when the understrength Crocs took the field in the cup, rounds one and two in the afternoon took a punishing toll.
“The club has a duty of care to its players,” Bradsworth said. “That’s why we couldn’t send injured players out again. There were guys who could not step out onto the ground.”
An infuriated CAFL demanded a letter of explanation from the Crocs by Tuesday night. The local team were fervently hoping that any sanction by the league did not extend to withdrawal of the CAFL’S $33,000 subsidy of the club.
The Crocs take on arch rivals Saints at Cazaly’s on Saturday (Reserves 4 pm) for Round 1 of the season proper, and Bradsworth says the club isn’t too flash.
“We’re going to struggle. We’ll try to get some more guys registered.
“There’ll definitely be some Colts in there . . .”
