Kingfish and beer

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Santiago Villamil

I COME from Uruguay. I fish quite a lot back home, but it’s nothing like the fish you have up here. There are quite a lot of fish, one that I don’t know the name in English but it’s like snapper and barracuda, a lot of different things but much smaller than here.

I’ve been fishing places from Sydney to Port Douglas.

The best fish I ever caught was a 24kg kingfish in New Zealand about a year ago.

I was on a working holiday visa there. We had gone fishing out off Nelson. The charter started at about 6am, and about 8am I had this big bite on the line.

We were jigging. We had caught a few smaller ones, but this was a monster. It hit the line — bang! I didn’t know what to think, just “wow!” I was letting out line, the reel was screaming and the skipper was saying “let it run, let it run”.

It took half an hour to get it to the boat. I was getting tired. I was amazed when I finally saw this fish.

We made a big dinner in the hostel where I was staying. It was good with lots of beers.
