Coral Coast Judo wins national sporting awards
CORAL Coast Judo Club has scooped Judo Federation of Australia awards with prizes in three categories.
The club was recognised as the largest judo club in Queensland for the first time in the club’s 15 year history, after membership steadily increased thanks to club initiatives.
The club also won an award for the best new club initiative for judo in Australia with help from a $2000 grant from the Douglas Shire Council’s community support program to increase participation in sport throughout the shire.
Schools within the shire provided scholarship nominations with the club providing training and grading for the students, many of whom stayed on as members.
Douglas Mayor Julia Leu said the “council is so pleased that our community support program was able to assist the judo club develop a program for locals to come and try and promote the club.”
One of the benefits of the program was the increase in the number of female students by actively promoting judo as a sport and a form of self-defence. It led to the final award of third overall in Australia for female participation in judo.
Club president Jeff Anderson said “it was great to see the number of younger girls taking up the sport.”
