Co­ral Coast Judo wins na­tional sport­ing awards

CO­RAL Coast Judo Club has scooped Judo Fed­er­a­tion of Aus­tralia awards with prizes in three cat­e­gories.

The club was recog­nised as the largest judo club in Queens­land for the first time in the club’s 15 year his­tory, af­ter mem­ber­ship steadily in­creased thanks to club ini­tia­tives.

The club also won an award for the best new club ini­tia­tive for judo in Aus­tralia with help from a $2000 grant from the Dou­glas Shire Coun­cil’s com­mu­nity sup­port pro­gram to in­crease par­tic­i­pa­tion in sport through­out the shire.

Schools within the shire pro­vided schol­ar­ship nom­i­na­tions with the club pro­vid­ing train­ing and grad­ing for the stu­dents, many of whom stayed on as mem­bers.

Dou­glas Mayor Ju­lia Leu said the “coun­cil is so pleased that our com­mu­nity sup­port pro­gram was able to as­sist the judo club de­velop a pro­gram for lo­cals to come and try and pro­mote the club.”

One of the ben­e­fits of the pro­gram was the in­crease in the num­ber of fe­male stu­dents by ac­tively pro­mot­ing judo as a sport and a form of self-defence. It led to the fi­nal award of third over­all in Aus­tralia for fe­male par­tic­i­pa­tion in judo.

Club pres­i­dent Jeff Anderson said “it was great to see the num­ber of younger girls tak­ing up the sport.”
