Body of man in submerged ute at Diwan

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Alicia Nally

THE body of a man has been discovered inside a ute submerged in a creek at Cape Tribulation.

Emergency services were called to the area about 2.45pm yesterday afternoon (April 5) after members of the public reported seeing the vehicle near Diwan.

RACQ technician Bob Perry noticed the ute about 300m south of the Turpentine Rd-Cape Tribulation Rd intersection at about 2pm yesterday afternoon. He reported the sighting to a local service station attendant. “It looked like a yellow ute because of the colour of the water,” he said.

“We figured out it might be a local bloke’s but I went around to his house and he was sitting on the front lawn.

“Then people started coming in to the service station left, right and centre and started saying someone was in there.”

It is believed the ute may have crashed on Tuesday evening. Mr Perry said the spot was notoriously dangerous. “If you come around that corner and lose control you’re in the lap of the gods,” he said.

Police were still unsure of the circumstances of the crash last night and the Forensic Crash Unit was still investigating.
