Clink alive to sound of music
THE premiere of Douglas Theatre Arts Group’s The Sound of Music was staged on Sunday night to an almost capacity crowd and audience reaction was conclusive. It is a resounding success.
Not only did the cast provide compelling renditions of family favourites from the much-loved classic musical, the characters endeared themselves quickly to the audience and there was genuine empathy from those present.
Cathy Knight (Maria) and Bill Cooney (Capt von Trapp) gave powerful performances and sang with credibility and energy.
Alteouise Devaughn portrayed the commanding yet sensitive character of Mother Abbess with great skill and her voice was indeed angelic. Her moving performances of Climb Every Mountain sent thrills through the audience.
Of course the von Trapp children are really the stars of the show, with each of the seven providing their own individual and appealing contribution to the show.
The director/producer of the production, Michael Kerr, said there has been a mammoth rehearsal schedule as there are four alternate casts of the children, two alternate casts of adults, and three Marias.
“It has been a wonderful experience, especially for the children,” Michael said, “as kids in regional Australia often don’t get the opportunity to be part of a significant production such as this.
“With this taste of performing, some of the children might want to pursue a stage career.”
This is the third Clink production for the musical director, Alteouise Devaughn, who also directed the singing and music for Annie and Grease.
Alteouise performed The Sound of Music when she was 16 years old and was keen to help direct it in Port Douglas.
Reactions from theatregoers were all positive.
“Best money I’ve spent in years,” was one comment and “Bloody wonderful – I had goose bumps” was another.
The sets and props were simple and effective, the lighting and sound very good. It is hard to eclipse the impact of the music and lyrics of Rogers and Hammerstein and many of the much-loved songs – My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria and Edelweiss had the audience quietly singing along.
The highlight of the show was at the end when the von Trapp family leave on their escape through the mountains from Nazi Austria to neutral Switzerland. Alteouise as the Mother Abbess, wishing the family safety and success, sang in full mezzo-soprano voice Climb Every Mountain. A moment of true theatrical exhilaration.
