DOUGLAS UNITED DOWN ATHERTON EAGLES

SENIORS ROUND 2 Douglas United vs Atherton Eagles FC.

The wheels on the BTS tour bus went round and round, as the Dragons flashed up and up the Range on their way to Atherton.

The team was bolstered by Dragon debutants Mathew ‘1T’ Ball, Andrea “Ski” Moreschini (Italy) and Dragon stalwarts Ben ‘BenKnee’ Syrett and Matthew ‘Smudgee’ Smith.

A delayed kick off – 8:50pm! – had the 80-strong Atherton supporters, and four Douglas cheerleaders baited for the battle of Eagles and Dragons.

A corner for the Dragons saw super Joey Bownes get involved in a goal mouth scramble that put the ball into the back of Atherton’s goal. Own goal Atherton! Or was it #agoalforjoe! It couldn’t be decided, off to the match review panel, but 1-0 Douglas United.

The Dragons dominated the early play, and won another few corners to no avail. Until… with the wind beneath his wings, Big Bad Benny’s Bette Midler inspired header firing into the Atherton net. 2-0 Douglas!

Logan Marsh got into the swing of things, rising higher than an Eagle, soaring and scoring from his head for the Dragons’ third.

The second half kicked off, and Matty Smith got kicked at, the resulting penalty shout being waved away for a dubious decided corner. The defender got a touch.. Another corner! Goal! Ben Syrett, almost cancelling out his yearly own goal average in his first match of the season.

As the tired travelling Dragons went past their Paddy’s happy hour bed time, Atherton counter attacked and counter attacked, squeezing one past Douglas Keeper Gaz Fitzgerald to finish off the game. It was 4-1 to Douglas.

Now two from two, the Dragons are off to Stratford next week to play some former teammates. A big thankyou for BTS Tours for their support, and major sponsors Marano’s Fuels and Paddy’s Irish Bar & Grill.

Remember to study for our Trivia night next Wednesday, April 12 at 6:30pm!
