Advance Cairns tackles reef claim
THE head of the Far North’s peak economic body has rejected claims the region will suffer a $1 billion downturn if coral bleaching continues on the Great Barrier Reef.
Advance Cairns CEO Kevin Byrne described the Climate Council’s report as an “overexaggeration” of the state of the natural asset.
“We won’t take a hit in the economy from the current bleaching,” he said. He called upon the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and tour operators to help counter negative publicity from “doomsday theorists” about the state of the Reef.
“We need to respond to these doomsday theorists with a robust campaign of positive news,” he said.
