Rainbows of difference at PDSS

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS @SCHOOL -

PORT Douglas held its Autism Awareness Day on Friday, April 21 to help educate the students about autism.

This year the focus was on how people with autism find it difficult to communicate and understand social situations. Each class at the school was required to participate in a competition to write a social story to assist a person with autism to understand how to go about a particular role in a social circumstance.

The results were marvellous. The children’s illustrations were in comic book style and photographs were the order of the day. The winning classes produced books that were very personal and useful to children with autism.

Miss Power’s Year 5 class was the winner from the senior school and Mr Kilfoy’s Year 3/4 took out the honours for the junior school.

The winning classes will receive a class pizza party.
