Locals anxious over hospital
COOK MP Billy Gordon has threatened to block the State budget if the government does not agree to a list of demands for Mareeba Hospital.
The controversial crossbencher was among almost 800 people – including health bosses – who attended a public meeting in Mareeba on Tuesday night.
Residents attending the meeting claimed several services have either been downsized or are in danger of being cut at the hospital, including the total number of patient beds, the emergency department, the sterilisation unit, and maintenance and security staff.
A vote of no confidence in the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), and Health Minister Cameron Dick was passed at the meeting.
Several resolutions were also passed, including that “the State Health Minister identify and relocate elsewhere those persons who have been responsible for the reduction in services at Mareeba.”
Mr Gordon said he would formally write to Mr Dick outlining all concerns raised and ask for a guarantee that services won’t be cut now, or in the future.
“I feel the concern in the community about the hospital and I do understand the needs of the hospital here in Mareeba,” he said. “I will not be supporting the government’s State Budget if they do not agree to the resolutions outlined.”
