Total footy brings the magic for Dragons
DOUGLAS United were on the road again on Friday night, travelling down to Trinity Park, to play against the top of the table Marlin Coast Rangers for round 6.
With both teams undefeated, the supporters were in for a spectacle.
A disco emanating from the Rangers’ dressing room confused the Douglas Dragons! How dare they party on our Friday nights!
A traditional kick off saw Douglas unleashing total football! A series of kick passing led to an early shot from Adriano, the ball blistering towards goal was to hot for the keeper to hold, and as fast as lightning Joe Fox screamed into the box to blast the ball into the back of the net, GOAL Dragons! 1-0 in the first minute!
The Dragons relentlessly pushed on hunting for another goal, however realised Adam Howell how come with two left feet, and were almost punished as the Marlin Coast striker took possession of the ball, and quickly shot towards the near post, forcing Gaz Fitzgerald into a great reflex save. The striker let everyone know how unimpressed he was, giving Gaz a shove. This left Logan Marsh furious, and lecturing the referee in words of his wisdom, got given a yellow card for knowing too much about Football.
The game was intense, fast and furious, a frustrated Adriano cheekily tagging a Marlin, resulting in another yellow for the Dragons.
Great passing again led to a Dragon corner. Captain Daniel Ferrero blasting in a low, hard corner, straight towards Matty Smith, who nodded the ball on with a whiplashing header. 2-0 Douglas United.
With the Dragons settling in, reeling the opposition in, the Marlins slipped the hook, and conceded two quick goals just before half time. 2-2.
An inspiring half time talk by coach Barry Fellows, in what we believe is some form of English, the boys fired back up. Hitting the ground running in the second half, the quick passing was back, and Max Taylor was ready to prove the scribe wrong, blasting in a bolter into the underside of the crossbar and in, 3-2 Dragons.
The game was balancing on a knife’s edge, and the Dragons were caught out on the counter attack. Now 3-3.
After supporting the local Netball in the week, Daniel Ferrero stepped up with a throw in, almost throwing out his shoulder, his netball career in the bin. With minutes remaining, Marlin Coast shot wide, and the thankful Dragons counter attacked, Matty Smith crossing a ball over with seconds remaining, Joey Bownes bouncing and banging in a header. GOOAAALLLL! 4-3 Dragons! And full time!
DJ Beat Boxer Benny Syrett was belting out the tunes in the away dressing rooms.
