Sun shines on Carnivale tennis

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

FORTUNATELY the weather was much kinder for the Carnivale tennis cup than last year when the event was a wash-out with torrential rain.

Although entrants were fewer, the talent was top-class with visiting players from Cairns clubs adding to the competition.

The Cup was a competition of “mixed” doubles.

The standard of tennis was very high. Kathie Latham (a former long-time member of our Club) and James Sheridan from Cairns won all their sets on the day but were hotly contended by local members, particularly Kiani Berzinski/ Neal Brooks, Joan Berzinski/ Alex White and Angie Johnson/Herold Prins.

The final deciding match between Katie/James and Kiani/Neal was a showstopper with scores being game-for-game right up to the end of the match to a tight tiebreaker with the ultimate win by Katie/James for the honour of the Cup.

Congratulations for very entertaining tennis.

The event was well organised beforehand and on the day as usual by June Hall and the friendly socialization and good sportsmanship made the day all the more fun.

What a great game tennis is! Why not come and play?

Left to right: Kiani Berzinski, Neal Brooks, Katie Latham, James Sheridan.
