It’s always a mixed bag here

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Mark Nolan

THE best fish I’ve ever caught at this spot would be a whopping mangrove jack. It’s funny because we sit here with ourrods and people will tell us we’d catch nothing here. But here comes this 45 cm jack, it put up a good fight, they hit hard and take off. It definitely bent the rod a little bit. When I got it close to the shore it tried to run into the rocks to unhook itself. A fishing charter was going by as I pulled the jack in and I could here them all clapping and cheering. It’s always fun fishing up here. There’s such a variety up here. We’ve caught barracuda, trevally, queenfish, flounder, a few eels and a stingray. Catching the stingray was good fun. It put up a good fight and when I got him close it tried to bury itself in the mud. I had to get him up on the rocks and wait for him to settle down to get the hook out. I wasn’t too nervous, I just had to watch the tail. The life in this estuary is beautiful. Sometimes it gets a bit quiet when we’re here so we just sit and watch the boats go by. This is a great spot. My old favourite spot used to be the bridge at the Mowbray. I’m hoping the council put the bridge back so we can fish there again. We’re here on holiday from Perth; we try and come to Port every year. In Perth it’s mostly beach fishing for tailor fish and herring. They don’t have the water systems like they do here. When I fish up here I make sure I have thick trace on! All the fish here have nice teeth.
