Those Friday night lights!

Douglas United Dragons remain undefeated

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Matt McMaster

A thrilling 3-3 draw between Douglas United and the Mareeba Bulls Orange at Raiders Park saw two of the competition heavyweights remain undefeated.

New goal posts shimmered in the light, freshly painted lines as straight as a caveman’s arrow. Smoke billowing from Rodney Rasmessi’s Team Deep North BBQ’s smoker, as Branchy was sorting and pouring the ice-cold beer.

The old and new Dragon supporters flying in from near and far despite the Port Douglas wintry weather threatening jeans and jackets for some.

The Dragons and Bulls were ready, both at the top end of the table, they would not be giving up their undefeated streaks easily.

Matty “Mitcham” Smith dove straight into the Ref’s book from the kick off with a yellow card, before Adam Howells’ hammy gave way to force coach Baz into some early changes.

The Dragons were not deterred as they pressured the Bulls throughout the early stages.

The ball was cleared high into the air and Adriano Gualtieri volleyed an absolute thunderbolt into the top corner!

Delirium set into the supporters on the hill as they danced around, picking up their jaws off the floor.

The Bulls snuck in a tidy finish, before Matty Smith toe poked home from a goal mouth scramble to return Dragons’ lead, 2-1 at halftime.

The Raiders home ground influence was to be enjoyed, as well as Paul and Mel Ferrero’s son, Daniel, who struck home from the edge of the box for the Dragons to take a 3-1 lead.

Youngster Curtis White was taking the Bulls by the horns, winning a weighty tackle that should have seen him lose a leg.

Douglas thought they had the game home and hosed, but were quickly blindsided looking at the Raiders scoreboard, conceding two late goals.

Full time it was 3-3. Despite the result the only disappointment of the night was not getting Adriano’s goal on camera for it to break the internet.
