Under 8 and undefeated

Mossman juniors amass 50 wins on the trot!

THE Under 8 Mossman Sharks have a team song that’s about winning together and losing together, but in their past 50 matches – 2½ seasons of footy – the losing bit doesn’t apply.

Coach Billy Adams couldn’t be prouder of this special group of players who have now amassed this astonishing record of 50 consecutive wins.

And, he says, they’ve done it like champions, with good spirit and heart, and wonderful sportsmanship.

It started three years ago with a core group of Chaelyn Bowen, Flynn Mackay, Kia Brown and Leben Adams, joined in the next couple of years by Wylen Thorburn, Miseron Whap, Cooper Broadley, Gemma Brooks, Dajarn Hobbler, Alex McDonald, Hunta Baird, Dwayne Marawki, and Lony Gibson.

They grew into an amazing team. Billy could see it right from the first season, in which they went undefeated.

“I knew I had a strong defensive side,” said Billy. “The team love to tackle and at times at training I’ve had to wipe away the odd bloody noses and some tears.

“They are only young but as a team they are extremely competitive, with a couple of the players standing up as leaders. They showed friendship and encouragement to the new players who came along and joined the side.”

They don’t know about losing except that when it happens they will accept it with a smile. It’s only a game.

“At times, as the coach, I just want them to have fun, but they take a team scoring a try against them very personally.”

Sometimes they have been down on numbers but that hasn’t changed the outcome either.

With pre-season and regular fixtures underway, last weekend the side played the best from the two Brothers sides, notching their 50th victory on the trot.

Billy Adams, in his 20th year as a junior coach at the Sharks and now president, reckons it’s time the district kne, how good a footy side they have in this team.

“They are the first to clap together if an opposition player gets hurt and leaves the field, and also to shake the hands of players after the match,” he said.

Of course, there is a band of helps and supporters behind any top team.

Billy points to Wade Broadly and Brenda Solomon at League Safe, and not least, the mothers who take home the jerseys and have them ready for the next week’s game, and the families who do so well to get the players to each match – mostly away from Mossman.

“Well done, kids,” said Billy. “Up the Sharkies!”
