Water on DSC’s agenda for capital works
IT’S not just the new Port Douglas reservoir that’s on council’s agenda lately when it comes to water.
Council is looking at extensive and highly significant water system upgrades over coming years.
Subject to council approval, DSC’s capital program will include an improved intake at Rex Creek, an additional water source in the Mossman River upstream of Anich’s Bridge, two critical revetments walls at the Mossman Wastewater plant, and a duplication of the wastewater plant clarifier.
The Rex Creek intake, which serves Port Douglas and Mossman, suffers clogging from sand and high turbidity which in major storm events means the water system has to be shut down. Various measures will aim to improve screens, sand scouring and turbidity, including monitoring.
At Drumsara Quarry on the Mossman River, council has identified a spot where it may install a submerged river bed intake, which will add to the shire’s water resilience options.
At the wastewater plant, the Mossman River and the South Mossman River are seriously eroding two side of the property which lead to the confluence of the rivers.
