SIGNING OFF, AFTER A MILLION WORDS, A MILLION TUNES
At 1pm on June 23, Radio Port Douglas stopped broadcasting and the soundtrack to the best 15 years of my life came to an end. I know some of you feel the same way.
It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made but it was time for Helen and I to retire and, after four years searching unsuccessfully for new owners, we decided to close the station rather than take on the obligations of another fiscal year.
I want to thank all of you who enjoyed and participated in this conspiracy of good taste, integrity, great music, and interesting banter. Thank you for your support.
Special thanks to Dale Priem for keeping Hal alive and filled with the best music and for keeping us on the air and to Nick Swainson for his loyalty, dedication and incredible professionalism. I don’t think there is a better DJ on the planet.
And thank you to all our special hosts who contributed to the quirky nature of Radio Port Douglas, especially Dr Doug Freeman and Seth & the Reggae boys on Friday night, Russel Hore and Dougie Baird for the Q/S Reef Brief, Don and Lana, Billie and Rainbeaux, Rabbit and Smooze, Bobby Maguire, the amazing Michael “the Wolfman” Volkov and Micka & the Gusman. Posthumous thanks to Parrothead Bob, the Rev and Tamsin.
Thank you to my special guests: the mayor of the DS, Julia Leu, Andre Leu the Prez of IFOAM, Tara Bennett and the elusive SnrSgt Damian Meadows, our roving (not to say “raving”) foreign correspondent, Rod Davis, Emma Cohen, Peter Livesey, Kym Rowley, Crispin Hull, the amazing Shane Nichols, the Great Weather Kahuna, Don Murday and our very own sports guru, Dave Double O, Evans.
And a big thank you to all the great local businesses who kept us on the air for the past 15 years. I’m not going to attempt to thank all of you individually but there are some that deserve special mention.starting with Rhys Bawden and Bill Conway at Salsa, Peter and Bev Martin from Lotsa Printing, Tracey and Wicked Willie and Stephen Little from Hello World, all of whom supported us from the start.
Big thank you also to Quicksilver, Sheraton, QT, Sailaway and LJ Hooker… to Betty Hinton at Floravilla Ice Cream, Andrew at on the Spot Signs, to Marco at
Zinc, Michael at Central Tyre, Brendan and Ann from PD Automotive, Chris and Rob from the Pool Shop, Rick from Watergate, the whole team at OTI, Tim from the Courty and the Central, the amazing Danny and Laura Gray from Rattle and Paddy’s (Liam, too). Special thanks to Marian McLeod, who helped me secure the Sheraton and the Mossman Gorge Centre accounts and who never let one of my many faux pas go unmentioned.
And, a big thank you to my to three favorite restaurant managers: Renae at Salsa, Henry at his own Seabean and the incredible Michaela Newton at OTI.
Oh, and thanks to Laurie from Santiego. Keep bringing in the prawns,
bro; this is, after all, a working port.
Thank you all for the best 15 years of local radio anywhere on the Planet.
Hasta la proxima.
Michael Gabour, Port Douglas
