Harding, Spanton show class
THE Port Douglas Tennis club held its Junior Club Championships over the last weekend and with the weather glorious the tennis was brilliant.
First up was the always improving Division 3 Red Ball. Arlo Jones had 2 strong wins followed by JJ Harding, Arthur Mahe and Dustin all having 1 win and 2 draws then followed by the always impressive Diesel. The red ball group should be all very proud of not only their tennis but also the way they conducted themselves on the court.
This was followed by Division 2 Girls. Cara Fregoni defeated Kara Gibson 6-1 in the consolation. Coco Fregoni defeated Chelsea Gibson 6-0. In the doubles, Cara Fregoni and Kara Gibson defeated Coco Fregoni and Chelsea Gibson 6-1 – these girls all showed improvement reflecting their very commendable effort.
In the boys Division 2 semi final Jai Stapleton defeated Dante Tierney 6-1 and Anzac Gamble defeated Charlie Moran 6-4.
The final was played out with Jai Stapleton against Anzac Gamble Jai played great tennis to beat Anzac 6-1
In the consolation Lochie Morrison defeated Ben Johnson 6-0.
The 2nd Division boys doubles was won by Jai Stapleton and Dante Tierney 6-4 over Charlie Moran and Anzac Gamble was a great set of doubles.
Well done to Jai Stapleton who continues to improve throughout the year taking out both the singles and the doubles titles.
Next was the Division 1 Boys and girls.
With a few new faces and some young juniors stepping up to the challenge it was the younger crew who shone through. Both finals were won by 10 year olds – Anna Harding and Rory Spanton showing up their older, more experienced players.
Cassia Jansen defeated Emma Hudson 6-0/6-2 in the semis and Anna Harding defeated Maya Remedios in a tough battle 6-1/3-6/10-3 in the tie breaker.
The final was the between Anna Harding and Cassia Jensen. Anna Harding proving too consistent for Cassia even though Cassia never gave up. Anna defeated Cassia 6-2/6-1
In the girls doubles Anna Harding and Emma Hudson defeated Cassia Jansen and Fleur Prins 6-4/6-5 – a super doubles match.
Congratulations to Emma Harding for being both singles and doubles club Champion.
Next the Div 1 boys – The semis was played out between Levi Trewick and Aidon Sexton. Levi too strong for Aidon winning 6-5/6-3 the second semi was between where Rory Spanton defeated Nash Thompson 6-2/6-1
The final between Levi Trewick and Rory Spanton was a David and Goliath encounter. Rory proved too good and too consistent on the day and taking out the final in impressive form 6-4/6-4
The boys doubles final was between Levi Trewick/Asher Shaw and Jason So/Quentin Nutt. Levi and Asher took out the doubles 6-4/6-4.
The division 1 mixed was won by Maya and Aaron Remedios over Cassia Jansen/Levi Trewick 6-2/2-6/10-8
Some amazing tennis was played over the weekend. The junior tennis in Port Douglas is improving all the time.
Every junior that entered not only showed great sportsmanship but it was very impressive to watch and be apart of the Port Douglas tennis club. Massive congratulations to Anna Harding and Rory Spanton the new Port Douglas Junior club champions.
