Hard­ing, Span­ton show class

THE Port Dou­glas Ten­nis club held its Ju­nior Club Cham­pi­onships over the last week­end and with the weather glo­ri­ous the ten­nis was bril­liant.

First up was the al­ways im­prov­ing Di­vi­sion 3 Red Ball. Arlo Jones had 2 strong wins fol­lowed by JJ Hard­ing, Arthur Mahe and Dustin all hav­ing 1 win and 2 draws then fol­lowed by the al­ways im­pres­sive Diesel. The red ball group should be all very proud of not only their ten­nis but also the way they con­ducted them­selves on the court.

This was fol­lowed by Di­vi­sion 2 Girls. Cara Fre­goni de­feated Kara Gib­son 6-1 in the con­so­la­tion. Coco Fre­goni de­feated Chelsea Gib­son 6-0. In the dou­bles, Cara Fre­goni and Kara Gib­son de­feated Coco Fre­goni and Chelsea Gib­son 6-1 – th­ese girls all showed im­prove­ment re­flect­ing their very com­mend­able ef­fort.

In the boys Di­vi­sion 2 semi fi­nal Jai Sta­ple­ton de­feated Dante Tier­ney 6-1 and An­zac Gam­ble de­feated Char­lie Mo­ran 6-4.

The fi­nal was played out with Jai Sta­ple­ton against An­zac Gam­ble Jai played great ten­nis to beat An­zac 6-1

In the con­so­la­tion Lochie Mor­ri­son de­feated Ben John­son 6-0.

The 2nd Di­vi­sion boys dou­bles was won by Jai Sta­ple­ton and Dante Tier­ney 6-4 over Char­lie Mo­ran and An­zac Gam­ble was a great set of dou­bles.

Well done to Jai Sta­ple­ton who con­tin­ues to im­prove through­out the year tak­ing out both the sin­gles and the dou­bles ti­tles.

Next was the Di­vi­sion 1 Boys and girls.

With a few new faces and some young ju­niors step­ping up to the chal­lenge it was the younger crew who shone through. Both fi­nals were won by 10 year olds – Anna Hard­ing and Rory Span­ton show­ing up their older, more ex­pe­ri­enced play­ers.

Cas­sia Jansen de­feated Emma Hud­son 6-0/6-2 in the semis and Anna Hard­ing de­feated Maya Reme­dios in a tough bat­tle 6-1/3-6/10-3 in the tie breaker.

The fi­nal was the between Anna Hard­ing and Cas­sia Jensen. Anna Hard­ing prov­ing too con­sis­tent for Cas­sia even though Cas­sia never gave up. Anna de­feated Cas­sia 6-2/6-1

In the girls dou­bles Anna Hard­ing and Emma Hud­son de­feated Cas­sia Jansen and Fleur Prins 6-4/6-5 – a su­per dou­bles match.

Con­grat­u­la­tions to Emma Hard­ing for be­ing both sin­gles and dou­bles club Cham­pion.

Next the Div 1 boys – The semis was played out between Levi Trewick and Ai­don Sex­ton. Levi too strong for Ai­don win­ning 6-5/6-3 the sec­ond semi was between where Rory Span­ton de­feated Nash Thomp­son 6-2/6-1

The fi­nal between Levi Trewick and Rory Span­ton was a David and Go­liath en­counter. Rory proved too good and too con­sis­tent on the day and tak­ing out the fi­nal in im­pres­sive form 6-4/6-4

The boys dou­bles fi­nal was between Levi Trewick/Asher Shaw and Ja­son So/Quentin Nutt. Levi and Asher took out the dou­bles 6-4/6-4.

The di­vi­sion 1 mixed was won by Maya and Aaron Reme­dios over Cas­sia Jansen/Levi Trewick 6-2/2-6/10-8

Some amaz­ing ten­nis was played over the week­end. The ju­nior ten­nis in Port Dou­glas is im­prov­ing all the time.

Ev­ery ju­nior that en­tered not only showed great sports­man­ship but it was very im­pres­sive to watch and be apart of the Port Dou­glas ten­nis club. Mas­sive con­grat­u­la­tions to Anna Hard­ing and Rory Span­ton the new Port Dou­glas Ju­nior club cham­pi­ons.
