PLAS­TIC Free July is be­ing marked in the the Dou­glas Shire with a se­ries of events to raise aware­ness of the neg­a­tive im­pacts of dis­pos­able plas­tic on the wildlife and en­vi­ron­ment. A grow­ing num­ber of com­mu­nity mem­bers have al­ready com­mit­ted to re­fus­ing to use sin­gle-use plas­tic items like bags, straws or cof­fee cups for the month. The coun­cil is urg­ing res­i­dents to reg­is­ter for the chal­lenge. Plas­tic Free Dou­glas is a col­lab­o­ra­tion of the coun­cil, Tan­garoa Blue marine ad­vo­cacy and lo­cal en­vi­ron­men­tally aware or­gan­i­sa­tions, busi­nesses and in­di­vid­u­als. “We’re de­lighted with how well our lo­cal com­mu­nity has re­sponded to the Plas­tic Free Dou­glas cam­paign since it was launched,” said Mayor Ju­lia Leu . “Our com­mu­ni­ties play an im­por­tant role in putting pres­sure on gov­ern­ments and busi­nesses to im­ple­ment al­ter­na­tives to dis­pos­able plas­tic.”
