Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

AFTER meeting with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk in May, Douglas mayor Julia Leu has welcomed the advice that Environment Minister Steven Miles is exploring the proposed Paws and Claws location further.

“I met with Minister Miles last Thursday when he provided me with a report from the Herbarium and some information from the Department of Main Roads and Transport.

“The Minister undertook to ask further questions of the Herbarium, and Council will explore suggestions provided by the State,” the mayor said

“Council has previously explored other avenues for potential suitable sites in the Douglas Shire, however the State has provided a list of suggested sites that officers will investigate, bearing in mind neighbouring amenity and critical operational needs.” “I expect to talk again with Minister Miles this week and we acknowledge the state government understands very clearly the needs of Douglas for an animal shelter.”

Labor candidate for Cook, Cynthia Lui, said.

“I wait to see the outcome of these discussions.

As the ALP candidate for Cook, I undertake to work with the Mayor and stakeholders to find a solution for the community.”
