The Scouts are on their way

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Gizelle Ghidella

THE children of the Douglas district will soon have a chance to raise their right hand and recite the Scout’s promise, as Scouts Queensland decide to reinstate the group in Mossman.

Scouts Queensland regional development and support officer Tony Langler is looking for adult volunteers to form a committee that will form a Scouts group in Mossman. “We want to generate an interest from adults in the area, and we’re looking for a chairman, treasurer, secretary and group leaders,” Mr Langler said.

“There’s roles for anybody who wants to put their hand up and volunteer.

“We provide all the training you need and you can even take it a step further and get a nationally recognised Cert III and Cert IV in Leadership and Management, paid for by the group.”

Scouts Queensland has been approached by locals in the past six months to establish a group in the community.

Mossman Scout group did have a revival back in 2014 but fizzled out and before then the group operated in 2004.

Scouts gets kids away from the iPads and computers and into the great outdoors.

“It’s all about education for life, kids learn skills, resilience, self-reliance, independence, self-confidence and all the skills that shape a better person for the future,” Mr Langer said.

“We do outdoor activities like camping, bush walking, abseiling and canoeing.

“We do embrace new technology with badges and achievements in our current program but we don’t have electronics on camp or section nights,” he said.

Mr Langler encourages everyone to get involved.

“You make some of the best friends you’ll ever have through scouting. Some of the best friends I had from when I was a kid in scouts I still have now,” Mr Langler said.

“The group will start to feel like your family and everyone joins for the same reasons, to give our kids a great opportunity to grow up as well rounded citizens.

“We are aiming to open the Mossman Scouts group for kids at the beginning of next year, once we get enough volunteers and a committee together,” he said.

If you or someone you know want to get involved in Mossman Scouts please contact Tony Langler on 0438304167 or rdso.seq@scout .
