Entsch keen to keep the Cape part of Leichhardt

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Shane Nichols

FEDERAL Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch says he would be “deeply conflicted” if a redrawing of electoral boundaries meant Cape York was deleted from his seat.

A redistribtion of boundaries is likely given that Leichhardt is now well above the population quota for a seat, thanks to solid population growth mainly in Cairns.

Mr Entsch told the he is in favour of a new seat being created to solve the quota issue, based on Cairns and district – including Kuranda, Yarrabah and Port Douglas – because it has the numbers to meet the quota.

“Leichhardt could be to Cairns what Kennedy is to Herbert (ie, Townsville).”

But he believes it is more likely Leichhardt will be shrunk and Bob Katter’s seat of Kennedy will grow.

Mr Katter is on record as opposing any enlargement, given Kennedy is already 2½ times the size of Victoria in land mass.

If his seat did lose the Cape, Mr Entsch said he would miss the character that is inherent in the wildly diverse and sprawling electorate.
