A mighty mahi-mahi

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Kane Montiford

THE greatest fish I’ve caught was a mahi-mahi off the coast of Mexico on a charter boat.

We were originally trawling to chase marlin but I got this big hit.

It was a fairly big fish, about 15 kilos. It put up a fantastic fight. I fought it for about 20 minutes.

Unfortunately we didn’t get any marlin but catching the mahi-mahi was a big highlight.

I’ve always wanted to catch one.

I’m on a holiday up here from Melbourne and we normally chase freshwater trout at home.

It’s all land based fishing, we’d just walk along the bank and cast lures or use worms.

There’s such a big difference between freshwater and saltwater fishing, you get bigger fish in the salt.

We’ve caught a few bream since we’ve been here but we’re hoping to get something bigger. Any fish is a good fish. We’re getting baited a lot which is a bit annoying.

I’ve love to catch a barramundi, they look like a great fight.
