Smithfield Vmax readies
DOUGLAS reisdents will soon be able to enjoy one of the biggest movie screens in the state with a long-awaited cinema complex taking shape at Smithfield in Cairns.
While an opening date has yet to be set, Event Cinemas Smithfield is on track to begin session screenings next month.
A cutting-edge Vmax theatre, featuring a 21.3-metre screen and more than 50 speakers, is the centrepiece of the new six-cinema facility.
The project is expected to be finished within a similar time frame to Smithfield Shopping Centre’s casual dining precinct, heralding the start of a new era for the Northern Beaches hub.
Event Cinemas Smithfield general manager Lee Staddon said the new centre had already created almost 50 jobs.
“This cinema had been talked about for many years … it’s a very exciting thing to be part of,” he said.
Blockbusters such as Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will be among the films shown in the 374-seat Vmax cinema over coming months.
Event Cinemas management have said the Smithfield Vmax, featuring Dolby Atmos technology, would be the state’s largest movie screen north of Brisbane.
Event intends to hold a special “red carpet” celebration to launch the new complex, which will also feature a fully licensed bar. With operations at Earlville, Cairns City and Cairns Central, Event is set to open its fourth Far North site.
