Mowbray fishing spot a chance

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

FISHOS take heart – Douglas Shire Council hasn’t given up on a new fishing platform at the site of the old bridge over the Mowbray River.

Following community consultation in March, Council decided to rebuild the fishing platform that would meet mainly local needs.

Council set aside $100,000 for the project in the 2016-17 budget.

But then the Department of Transport and Main Roads said there needed to be several hundred thousand dollars worth of roadworks to create a turnoff from the highway – which instantly put it beyond council’s budget.

Council still hopes to find a way. In answer to a question from the Gazette, a council spokesman said: “Council is continuing to discuss the project with the Department to ensure that all considerations are taken into account and the project can proceed in due course if a reasonable solution can be found for the turn-off roadworks.”
