State rolls out the Croc mat

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

A gathering of Far North Queensland mayors was given a preview of a stunning new teaching aid which is rolling out to schools and community groups to remind people to be Crocwise in croc country.

The Crocwise mat was unveiled to 13 mayors at a meeting of the FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQROC), hosted by Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council.

The Crocwise mat depicts life-sized outlines of a 5 metre crocodile, an average sized person and a standard tinny.

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s Lindsay Delzoppo said the Crocwise mat would become an integral part of the education programs which EHP wildlife officers deliver to schools and community groups in far north Queensland.

“I’m delighted the first Crocwise mats were ready for the FNQROC mayors to get a look at this bold new aid to help their communities be Crocwise,” Mr Delzoppo said.

“There are four Crocwise mats in a carpet material, each with its own carry case, to make it as easy as possible to take them around to schools, council offices, community events and tourist destinations – anywhere that people need to be reminded of the importance of always being Crocwise in croc country.

“A further four Crocwise mats have been produced on a light weight, colour-fast vinyl and these can be hung on the wall as well as placed on the floor to show people just how much bigger crocodiles can be than they might expect.”

Mr Delzoppo said the mats were part of a revitalisation of the Crocwise program which was currently in the final stages of development.

“We want to make sure that whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-term resident, young or old, you will be well aware of the need to always be Crocwise in croc country,” he said.

Schools and other organisations wishing to book a Crocwise mat and a free public education session with a wildlife officer can email EHP at NQeducation@ehp.qld.gov.au
