Firies bring message

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - @SCHOOL -

MOSSMAN firies have been doing the rounds of the schools again, teaching fire safety.

The focus is on things like not playing with matches and lighters, the ‘stop, drop and roll’ technique if your clothes catch fire, ‘Get down low and go go go’ if you need to escape a fire in the house, andto get out and stay out of a burning building and never go in to get favourite toys.

Another pointer is to stay outside at a safe meeting place with the family so emergency services can make sure everybody is accounted for.

The firies explain “good” fires and “bad” fires and how good fires can turn into bad fires. They teach that matches are tools and not toys – adults use tools and children only play with toys.

“We teach them about fire safety in a fun way,” one of the firies said. “We get them to practice a few things and also get them to go home and practice an evacuation drill with the family which helps.”
