KAP arranges for mowing service to power up again
A NEW program to provide lawn mowing and gardening services in Douglas Shire will launch soon.
It will be available to people benefitting from Home Assist services.
Katter’s Australian Party’s Member for Dalrymple, Shane Knuth MP, enlisted the assistance of the Housing Minister, Mick de Brenni, on a recent visit to the Tablelands.
“We had a pilot program that ran in the Tablelands but the Newman government scrapped it,” Mr Knuth said, “and last year I fought to reinstate it.”
Mr Knuth’s urging resulted in the pilot program being reinstated last year and last week the government agreed to extend the program across the state.
“It might not seem like much, but to pensioners and people with disabilities, it is everything,” he said.
Lawn mowing and gardening can be a struggle, according to Mr Knuth but he said that “for many people, this help can be the difference of being able to continue living in their own home rather than going into care”.
Ms Janet Goodall of Mossman said that the program “sounds idea”.
“We aren’t getting any younger and we often have to rely on family and friends to like an excellent get our lawns done,” Ms Goodall.
“With the program we can be a bit more independent.”
People who are eligible for services through Home Assist can apply for lawn mowing and gardening vouchers and requests will be evaluated on assessed needs.
